Family reunification

Marriage or relationship

Who will be able to come to the Netherlands for marriage or a relationship?

You want to rejoin your spouse or partner in the Netherlands. This is called ‘family reunification’. You were already a family when you lived abroad together. 

You want to live with your spouse or partner in the Netherlands; you have not lived together before. This is called ‘establishing a family’. When you started a relationship or got married, your spouse or partner was already living in the Netherlands. You were living abroad at this time.

Which conditions apply to you?

Marriage/Relationship

You want to live with your spouse or partner in the Netherlands. The following conditions apply:

  • you are married and your marriage has been registered in the Netherlands, in the municipal personal records database [Gemeentelijke Basisadministratie];
  • or you are both unmarried and you are able to prove this with official legalized documents;
  • you are not a danger to public order;
  • you are 21 or older. In the case of family reunification, you must be 18 or older;
  • you will live with your spouse or partner as soon as you arrive in the Netherlands:
    - you are intending to run a joint household with your spouse or partner;
    - you are going to register yourself at the same address as your spouse or partner.   
  • you are required to take the civic integration examination abroad (Caution: you are exempted from taking the civil integration test if you have the American, Australian, Canadian, Japanese, New Zealand or South Korean nationality). 

  
 

The following conditions apply to your partner/spouse in the Netherlands:

  • he/she is 21 or older. In the case of family reunification, he/she must be 18 or older;
  • he/she enjoys a sufficient income in the Netherlands; in some cases your partner’s income will not be checked. 


Your family member is a Dutch citizen

  • Income:
    Your family member has a net income of at least 120 per cent of the family level set by the National Assistance Act.
  • If he is aged between 18 and 23, it is sufficient if he can show that he works at least 32 hours per week. This is changed in April 2004 into 21 years)
  • Your family member is be able to show he has an employment contract for at least 1 year when the application is made.
  • If it is your husband or wife the marriage must be registered in the local council’s personal records database.


Your family member has a permanent residence permit

  • Income:
    Your family member has a minimum net income of at least 120 per cent of the family level set by the National Assistance Act.
  • If he is aged between 18 and 23, it is sufficient if he can show that he works at least 32 hours per week.( this is changed in April 2004 into 21 years)
  • Your family is be able to show he has an employment contract for at least 1 year when the application is made.

Your family member has a temporary residence permit

  • Income:
    He has a minimum net income that is equal to or more than the family level set by the National Assistance Act.
  • Your family member is able to show he has an employment contract for at least 1 year when the application is made.
  • If it is your husband or wife the marriage must be registered in the local council’s personal records database.


To prove that you satisfy these conditions you must be able to produce a number of documents.

Documents

In order to be eligible for family reunification, you must be able to produce a number of documents.

Your family member is a Dutch citizen, has a permanent residence permit, or has a temporary residence permit

In order to be eligible for family reunification you will in all cases need the following documents:

  • A valid passport (copy);
  • 4 color passport photographs;
  • A notarized birth certificate;
  • If married: a notarized marriage certificate.;
  • For children: any relevant custody documents;
  • Other family members: notarized documents which show the family relationship.            


Your family member in the Netherlands will need the following documents:

  • A recent employer's declaration;
  • An employment contract for at least 1 year;
  • His last 3 pay slips;
  • An extract from the population register;


Your family member is a recognized refugee

If your family member applies for you to join him within a reasonable period (3 months), he must try to support your application with as many documents as possible
